MY GRANDMA’S TIPS: COCONUT OIL

The column where Melonie Clarke shares her grandmother’s health wisdom
Coconut oil is one of nature’s best beauty products – the oil is great for your skin and hair. An excellent conditioner, massaging coconut oil into your hair every day (or whenever you wash it), can help the regrowth process in damaged hair. This is because of the presence of essential proteins required to nourish the hair.

Regularly massaging your head with the oil can ease dandru‡ and a dry scalp. It has also been used as a cure for head lice.

Coconut oil is a great skin moisturiser and can help to moisten dry skin. There has been some success in the delay of the appearance of wrinkles and skin ageing. It can also help to ease various problems such as psoriasis and dermatitis.

Coconut oil is high in lauric acid (about 7g) is present per tablespoon, which can help to boost the immune system through its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Use the oil in cooking, on salads or as a moisturiser and for best results, use the pure oil, which is available from most supermarkets or chemists.
