Lb for a £ Challenge
Irene Oke, Samantha Anderson and Andrea Taylor have signed up to Lb for a £, which is designed to help people lose weight, get fit and raise funds for vital research.
"We saw the advertising for the campaign at work and decided to sign up," said Irene, Display Advertising Executive at The Lady magazine.
"It makes the point that being overweight is a contributory factor in bowel cancer, so we thought we'd help ourselves and help the charity at the same time."
Irene, 47, from Clapham hopes to lose 10lbs in the month-long Lb for £ campaign which kicked off on January 7.
"I don't really diet. I believe in healthy eating, so I'll just be more careful about what I eat and watch the portion sizes," she said.
Fellow Display Advertising Executive Sam, 34, wants to lose "a few stone". "We'll be full up and fed up after Christmas, so this will get us going," she said.
Advertising Sales Manager Andrea, 41, from Tottenham has been thinking about losing weight all year but couldn't get motivated.
"I've piled on loads because I eat when I'm bored. It's been a year of no holiday, too much TV and too many cheese and onion crisps. It's time for portion control and a smaller bowl of singapore noodles," she said.
Taking part in Lb for a £ is simple: registration online costs £5. Getting sponsorship would bring an added bonus to the charity dedicated to research into bowel disease.
Chief Executive of Bowel & Cancer Research Deborah Gilbert thanked The Lady trio for signing up to Lb for £.
"Carrying excess weight around the middle increases the risks associated with bowel cancer so it makes sense to try and keep as trim as possible," she said.
She stressed that Lb for a £ is not a diet, but a fundraising and awareness campaign. "We don't mind what you eat – we'll just help you eat more healthily and lose weight in a sustainable way, so that all that effort doesn't literally go to 'waist'."
The charity has teamed up with three professionals who will send healthy recipes and daily tips on fitness, food and nutrition to everyone who signs up to Lb for a £.
They are personal trainer Louise Condon from the New Mission Gym in Harpenden, Principal of Billingsgate Seafood Cookery School CJ Jackson, and dietician Yvonne McKenzie who is the clinical lead in Irritable Bowel Syndrome for the British Dietetic Association.
