MY GRANDMA’S REMEDIES: CRANBERRIES

The column where Melonie Clarke shares her grandmother’s health wisdom
These small red berries, which are native to North America, are perhaps best known for helping to prevent and ease urinary tract infections (UTIs).

For those who su‹ffer regularly, they are a great natural remedy, with the high levels of proanthocyanidins (PACs) in the berries acting as a natural antibiotic.

The PACs that help to ˜fight UTIs can also combat dental bacteria. It is thought that they stop bacteria binding to teeth and gums, helping to prevent gum disease. The berries are also high in ˜fibre and are believed to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, and to help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Cranberries can also protect the body from free radicals and have cancer-fighting properties. Research has found they can slow a tumour’s progression. They are also full of vitamin C, particularly helpful at this time of year.
