Dance lovers have much to celebrate this summer as The Australian Ballet returns to the Royal Opera House for the first time in 35 years.
The short season, from 2 – 6 August, opens with one of George Balanchine’s most loved works, Jewels. This gorgeous ballet sweeps through the romanticism of France in Emeralds, New York City's jazz age in Rubies and the majesty of the 19th-century Russian imperial court in Diamonds.
A plotless, abstract work, Jewels is a distillation of pure movement and will demonstrate both the classical precision and stylistic versatility of The Australian Ballet’s dancers. Each movement is scored by the strikingly distinct music of three composers: Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
The London season closes on Sunday 6 August with a special one-off 60th Anniversary celebration performance – a major excerpt from Alexei Ratmansky’s Harlequinade, seen for the first time in the UK - as well as neo-classical works by Georges Balanchine and Kenneth Macmillan. It will also showcase contemporary works and classical favourites from the company's much-loved repertory.The Australian Ballet began performing in the UK in 1965, and this visit to London will be their first international tour under the leadership of Artistic Director David Hallberg, marking their first return to international touring since 2019.
