Duke and Duchess of Cambridge name their son George Alexander Louis

Weeks of speculation on what the Royal baby would be called have ended with the annoucement that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their son George Alexander Louis.

The country had to wait over 24 hours to hear the name for the third in line to the throne, - but this is not long compared with previous royal births. Indeed Prince William's name wasn't announced for a week.

Kensington Palace said in a short statement: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son George Alexander Louis.

"The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge."

We have had six King Georges. George I acceded to the throne in 1714. The last was the Queen's father George VI - known to his family as Bertie.
