MY GRANDMA’S REMEDIES: SPIRULINA

The column where Melonie Clarke shares her grandmother’s health wisdom
A blue-green algae, spirulina was used by the Aztecs, and is an excellent dietary supplement. It is high in antioxidants, including selenium, vitamin E, and carotenoids, which help to destroy the free radicals that can damage cells and in some cases lead to cancer.

Spirulina also has bacteria-fighting properties and it boosts the body’s immune system by assisting in the production of macrophytes and monocytes, the cells that can fight viruses.

The algae is a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids, zinc, omegas 3 and 6, and vitamins B1 and B2, to name but a few in a long list of benefits. You can buy it as a supplement (tablet or powdered form) from healthfood stores, supermarkets and online. Bounce natural energy balls (£1.79) are snacks that also contain spirulina and are available from Holland & Barrett.
