MY GRANDMA’S REMEDIES: ROSEMARY

The column where Melonie Clarke shares her grandmother’s health wisdom
A great addition to any garden, the Mediterranean herb rosemary is delicious and fragrant, but has health bene…fits, too. It is believed to have memory-boosting properties, and the diterpene carnosic acid in the plant may protect against Alzheimer’s. Its fragrance is also thought to be a mood-booster.

If you suffer from migraine headaches, add rosemary (in plant or oil form) to a bowl of boiling water, place a towel over your head and inhale the steam. After 10 minutes you should feel an improvement. This treatment can also ease cold and ›flu symptoms.

Rosemary is an effective anti-in›flammatory agent – rubbing the oil into aching joints can relieve pain and swelling. It is also used in anti-ageing products, helping to reduce puffiness and increase blood ›flow to the skin. The herb is easily grown in the garden but it’s also used in remedies in pharmacies and health-food shops.
