MY GRANDMA’S REMEDIES: PEANUT BUTTER

The column where Melonie Clarke shares her grandmother’s health wisdom
Many people make peanut butter sandwiches for their children but do not think to do so for themselves. But my nan still keeps a jar in her cupboard due to its great health benefits.

Peanut butter – it must be the natural type – can be a great diet food. High in fibre and protein (great for repairing muscles) it leaves you feeling fuller for longer.

Packed full of vitamins, including E and B6, as well as magnesium, which helps maintain healthy bones, and potassium, natural peanut butter is also an antioxidant and can decrease the risk of heart disease.

It’s full of fat, of course, although it is the healthier type. Monounsaturated fat helps to keep your heart healthy, staveso ff’ diabetes and is an energy booster.

To get the full health benefits, be sure to choose the natural, crunchy peanut butter. If you use smooth, the fibre content is lower.
