MY GRANDMA’S REMEDIES: MUSHROOMS

The column where Melonie Clarke shares her grandmother’s health wisdom
Available all year round, mushrooms are a great addition to any meal. They are low in fat and calories, so using mushrooms instead of meat (particularly red meat) is a great way to watch your weight, keep your calorie intake down and not lose avour. They also help the body metabolise fats and protein. Mushrooms are the only fruit or vegetable source of vitamin D, which mostly comes from the sun. For an extra boost, add mushrooms to your meal, because vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and teeth.

They can also help to reduce tiredness, thanks to the presence of B vitamins (B2, 3 and 5). The Bs are also essential for pregnant women (folate in particular) as they help tissue growth during pregnancy. Vitamin B2 regulates energy release in the body and helps maintain a healthy nervous system. For recipes: www.justaddmushrooms.com
