MY GRANDMA’S REMEDIES: FENNEL

The column where Melonie Clarke shares her grandmother’s health wisdom
Also known as Florence fennel, finocchio, or sweet anise, fennel can be used both for culinary purposes and as a herbal remedy.

Fennel seed tea (teabags are available from most supermarkets or health food shops or you can make your own with dried seeds and some drops of honey) is an e’ffective way to combat bloating and indigestion. It can also help ease the e’ffects of irritable bowel syndrome.

Since fennel can help ease digestive problems – the most common reason for bad breath – it can help combat halitosis, too. For best results, use as a mouthwash or chew on a few fennel seeds.

Now the clocks have gone back and winter is officially here, it is always handy to have a natural remedy for a cold or sore throat to hand – and fennel can help. For nasal congestion add crushed fennel seeds to a bowl of boiling water and inhale the steam.
