MY GRANDMA’S REMEDIES: CLOVES

The column where Melonie Clarke shares her grandmother’s health wisdom
Few things are worse than toothache. But for natural relief until you can get to the dentist, cloves are the effective remedy. They can be used in oil or original form, as dried šflower buds, to ease toothache. To help relieve pain, massage the clove oil into the gums or chew on the dried plant. It is so effective that dentists themselves use clove-based products.

Cloves, which are native to Indonesia, are even used in some toothpastes, so if you are experiencing pain, it could be worth changing your toothpaste while you are suffering.

As well as easing tooth pain they can also help to combat bad breath and clear the throat of mucus – they are an ingredient in many Indonesian ‘kretek’ cigarette brands – and ease nausea.

Clove oil is available from most pharmacies. The toothpaste is harder to find, but you can buy it online or in specialist health stores.
