IT'S A BOY!
Less than 12 hours after Catherine and Prince William arrived at St Mary's hospital in London, the duchess gave birth to a 8lb 6oz baby boy. He is third in line to the throne.
In a brief statement, the Duke of Cambridge said 'We could not be happier.'
Words of congratulations have been flooding in from around the country and the world.
Prince Charles stated that he is 'overjoyed at the arrival of my first granchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy. Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.'
The Duchess of Cornwall said: 'Mother, son, father all doing well. It is wonderfully uplifting for the country. It's wonderful for the grandfather, who is brilliant with children.'
Proud grandparents Carole and Michael Middleton were the first family members to see Baby Cambridge. Upon leaving the hospital they said 'he's absolutely beautiful', adding that the proud parents were doing 'Fabulously.'
The Earl of Spencer, William's uncle and brother to Diana, the Prince of Wales, commented: 'We are all so pleased: it's wonderful news. My father always told us how Diana was born on just such a blisteringly hot day, at Sandringham, in July 1961.'
Prime Minister David Cameron added his congratulations in an official statment delivered outside Downing Street: 'It is wonderful news from St Mary's, Paddington and I am sure that right across the country, and indeed right across the Commonwealth, people will be celebrating and wishing the royal couple well. It is an important moment in the life of our nation but, I suppose, above all it is a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who have got a brand new baby boy.'
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Reverend Justin Welby remarked: 'Along with millions here and around the world, I share in their joy at this special time.'
Meanwhile from across the Altantic, US President Barack Obama added his two cents: 'We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings.'
The official statement from Kensington Palace captured the happiness of the occasion: 'The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.'
