Never a clean bowl when you need one? Perhaps it’s time to invest in some dazzling new ones, says Hugh St Clair
During half term, in order to satisfy the random needs of teenagers who want a ‘bowl of something’ at unpredictable times during the day and night, a constant search for cereal bowls follows. Your entire stock is whipped out of cupboards to satisfy. Since teenagers do not wash-up, there are never enough clean bowls for adult needs – such as lunchtime soup. So, I have found some smart bowls that are acceptable, even pleasing, to children and adults alike in time for Christmas.

Summerill & Bishop’s Wonki Ware bowls (main image) are top of the list. Each bowl, handmade in South Africa, is slightly different and I love the shiny glaze.

In Brighton, Brickett Davda also makes slightly wonky bowls in hues inspired by the British outdoors (2). The exterior of the bowls are white but the insides are glazed in colours taken from heather, bracken and charcoal.

Sophie Conran, daughter of Sir Terence, has designed cereal bowls for Portmeirion china. Shaped like an old hat, they come in white porcelain (5).

Great British pottery Denby has a range of bowls called Halo, made in the traditional way using English clay (1). For festive bowls, head to Liberty for hand-painted cereal bowls in multicoloured prints (3, 4).
