FIRST IMPRESSIONS: JUDY PARFITT
I’m currently in the middle of shooting scenes for Call The Midwife.
When were you at your happiest?
When I had my son.
What is your greatest fear?
Not being able to clean my house.
What is your earliest memory?
A tree had fallen across a river and I was trying to get across it. I was very small.
What do you most dislike about yourself?
That’s a long list, darling! I’m impatient, intolerant, judgemental…
Who has been your greatest influence?
To be quite honest, I can’t think of anybody. I was influenced by all the wonderful, great actors and wanted to work hard to be somewhere approaching their talent.
What is your most treasured possession?
My granddaughters. I’ve got two.
What trait do you most deplore in others?
Unkindness.
What do you most dislike about your appearance?
Well, my lack of boobs. All sorts of things.
What is your favourite book?
Katherine by Anya Seton. I love that period. I also love Elizabeth The Great by Elizabeth Jenkins.
And your favourite film?
Strictly Ballroom, Singin’ In The Rain – there are just so many wonderful films.
What is your favourite record?
Lovely To Look At by Jerome Kern.
Your favourite meal?
Lobster salad.
Who would you most like to come to dinner?
Elizabeth I, Van Gogh, Audrey Hepburn, Charles Dickens, Jonas Salk, who found the answer to polio, Madame Curie and Groucho Marx.
What is the nastiest thing anyone has ever said to you?
Darling, I don’t think anyone has ever said anything nasty to me.
Do you believe in aliens?
No. What is your secret vice? Red wine.
Do you write thank-you notes?
Yes, I do.
Which phrase do you most over-use?
I’m afraid I’m like a lot of people and say ‘you know’ far too much.
What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
I don’t think I need anything to improve it. I think it’s perfectly all right as it is.
Tell us something we might not know about you.
I paint. I like doing portraits. But I haven’t lately because I’ve been so busy filming a series called The Game and the sitcom Up The Women, and now I’m doing nine episodes of Call The Midwife, so I haven’t had a lot of time.
What would you like your epitaph to read?
‘I had a great time’.
Judy is attending The Charity Awards on 12 June. For more information: www.civilsociety.co.uk – Call The Midwife returns for a fourth series in 2015.
