FIRST IMPRESSIONS: ANTHEA TURNER
A large project called NEAT [a range of storage products]. We have various pieces for most of the rooms in the house.
When were you at your happiest?
There are lots of happy times but I like to think, generally speaking, I am happy now.
What is your greatest fear?
Loneliness: we all like a little time on our own, occasionally, to retreat. But I like to be with lots of people.
What is your earliest memory?
I remember having a screaming fit while I was on the potty. I must have been about two and a half and it was such a trauma I can remember it to this day.
What do you most dislike about yourself?
Some of the fears that I hold on to, like my fear of loneliness.
Who has been your greatest influence?
There isn’t any one person, it’s a group of people.
What is your most treasured possession?
I have this bear called Brian that my dad brought me back from Germany when he was working there in 1960 and he’s the most beautiful bear. I have lots of pictures of him. He’s like a proper bear. He’s called Brian because that’s my dad’s name. He’s a German, straw-filled bear.
What trait do you most deplore in others?
Laziness.
What do you most dislike about your appearance?
Oh, there’s always going to be something. I’ve got a flat head, but thankfully, God gave me lots of hair.
What is your favourite book?
CS Lewis’s The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe.
And your favourite film?
The Sound Of Music.
What is your favourite song?
You Wear It Well by Rod Stewart [on the Never A Dull Moment album].
What is your favourite meal?
Chips and beans – Heinz baked beans.
Who would you most like to come to dinner?
David Cassidy, Margaret Thatcher – I’m not sure what they’d talk about, but who cares – and I’d like to speak to Gandhi. It’s a bit of a mixture really. I’d like a chat with Henry VIII and also Boudica. We’d have chips and beans and have a big discussion about how to sort out the world.
What is the nastiest thing anyone has ever said to you?
I think the worst thing that you can be accused of is something you haven’t done. I hate injustice – I absolutely loathe it. Many people have said lots of things about me but when I know damn well that I haven’t done it, said it, actioned it, thought it, then I get really upset.
Do you believe in aliens?
I can’t believe we’re here on our own, so there is something out there.
What is your secret vice?
Having a manicure – I have one every two weeks. I’m addicted.
Do you write thank-you notes?
Yes, I was brought up to write thank-you notes.
Which phrase do you most overuse?
The word ‘exactly’. ‘Tell me exactly what you mean by…’
What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
Access to the Bank of England; then I could not only improve my life but a lot of other people’s as well.
Can you tell us one thing people might not know about you?
I think my life has been a bit of an open book really.
What would you like your epitaph to read?
‘She was a trier’.
